Ive played countless weddings with the SAME track list request..ladies night..thriller. respect..September…old people still thinking that their party is going to be THE TRILLER party of all time.. instead.. maybe a seldom played ‘black or white’ or ‘bad’ would have fit the slot better, …also an MJ tune..providing the same effect..just not the corny predictable inappropriate halloween song. Most people aren’t in the business of thinking that way.

Its fucking, knowing what to play to make the crowd trust you..instead of having a crowd coming in with no trust..only trusting a handful of songs that they know…”play me good time number 436 from may 7 2016..followed by club banger #200 from June 5th 2010 followed by my all time fav make me dance overtime song from October 8th 2012…” the club goer isn’t the professional …don’t let them tell you how to flip that hamburger..if we went to clubs that relied on the club goer to select songs..then we would constantly hear Billie Jean on repeat.

I’m going to use an architect as metaphor…a normal person who wants to live in a house..usually goes and looks at already BUILT houses and finds which one fits them best (playing the sounds they like to hear)..most people don’t have the expertise to build/design their own home..they may know they want a walk in closet..(rap) or a walk in bathroom (funk) and when they go to see the home for sale (the club) they see whats already built (whats playing)…they don’t request that a walk in bathroom be BUILT in the finished house! The architects JOB is to build homes, that suit the most people..realizing that people like walk in bathrooms and closets..the architect should incorporate these into his plans (dj set)..but wait..heres the great part..because he’s studying this..he can provide the homes he’s building with more features that the person may not have know existed AND that they wanted..he can build walk in pantries and walk in refrigerators and other walk in features, knowing that his niche genre is walk in features..and the person who checks out that home.will be like…”holy shit!..I didn’t know I wanted a walk in refrigerator this bad!! this is fucking awesome…had i opens my mouth,I would have never been able to ask for something like that,because it isn’t my expertise”….thats the DJ’S art form..working super behind the scenes

If u set that vibe your in..if you fuck up that vibe your out..so I can see how its an issue in lets say 1994,…your the rave DJ ..its 2:00 AM ..and everyones sweaty…oof..oof…off…oof.. thats your 4 to the floor blaming..everyones pumping..but then your needle skips…record stops, and awkward silence..you just stopped the whole fucking party…or you try to mix a song…and fuck up beyond repair…and its noticeably throws the crowd off…I GET THAT>>I also get that that was then and this is now…back then the guy who could avoid messing up..or silence or skips..he is more valuable..He is more technical has more attention to detail..he has a better success rate at keeping my parties going…however..this is minutia.. today..technology makes that irrelevant. if I’m at a party..and for 4 seconds the DJ fucks up…I DON’T REALLY CARE…I’ve never met anyone who was like..I was riding high..and then after 5 songs..he stumbled for a few seconds..and it threw my whole night off..I left the club went home..and had a nightmare…WHO IS THAT PERSON??…thats right …they doesn’t exist!..he was created by that the guy with ‘superior’ mixing skills so he feels like he has some sort of musical DJ proprietorship..all the people care about is that you play songs..they don’t know if your up there mixing it live…playing it live..literally playing the song live with a synthesizer…they don’t know what the EQ knobs do..they see you twist it..they might think your doing an intense calculation..if you didn’t just twist it at this exact moment. just right 38 degrees counter clockwise.. the air locks would open and every one in the club gets sucked into deep space!! you can tell them your taking each song apart and putting it back together by hand..they don’t fucking know shit…they don’t know what it takes to make their favorite song play..all they know is if they hear it..they average person is not paying attention to your transition.,,.doesn’t care…the sync button is not your enemy..as a matter of fact…use it..use the fuck out of it. Use Seratos tempo to double check your work..use TECH to YOUR advantage.

instead of trying to brag about your mixing skills..brag about your song selection..this actually IS proprietary to you..DJ Diana will be able to play her unique style and tastes and songs, that she thinks after much testing will make the crowd the happiest. This will constantly evolve and change..but her brand is what she does to parties when controlling them..THAT will prevail….this is who you are as a DJ..to the people,,,the club owner…the other DJ’S…

fuck no..nobody gives a fuck..they hear the song…not you mixing..I mean..they hear the mixing too..but let it go man..if your fucking up..just train wreck it..or sync it..and KEEP going..thats not the important part…chances are your song selection and research is lacking if your sweating about just GETTING to the next song..practice that..getting more songs..I have so many songs to share with anyone who wants to listen. Thats my main focus..making a homogeneous mix that has proper synergy, balanced and smooth comes from practice and is so secondary to the actual songs that are playing, stereotypically if someone is capable of doing a flawless mix like that its a good indicator that they have their song selection skills on 100, and vice versa..if you have the perfect song after the perfect song..you might have mixed them before or know a thing or two about mixing them.

Don’t get lazy..always get the best and play the best if you can…the record is better than the WAV, the Wav is better than the mp3…how many Kilobytes per second is your mp3..perhaps you can get a better version of it..but thats about it..KNOW the quality of what your about to play..don’t play shit thats sounds like mud..don’t peak your mixer…don’t do dumb shit..and try to keep your songs best quality as possible..if i have the mp3, and I download the album from iTunes..guess what I’m not playing anymore? that lower quality MP3, simple. too many people who are butt hurt from carrying around vinyls and turntables for 20 years wanna add worth to those years by remarking how superior vinyl is…and it is…fresh vinyl..maybe if we didn’t have Serato to take a huge chunk out of what records can do that cdj’s can’t.. after 30 plays my seato WAV sounds better than your aging vinyl..which will get worse with time.
REMEMBER WHY your doing this..I’ve heard of DJ’s not playing along, because it wasn’t in a particular format they wanted..SNOB holes, declaring they’ll only play .FLAC files.. 1 gb USB filled to the brim with 8 FLAC songs..ooh look at your quality…that guy is an idiot…you don’t want bad sound quality..thats the RULE..however..NOT playing the WAV because you want to show off your snobby pickiness about the file type is a douche move..are you doing this because you like the music..or to showcase your technical knowledge..99.9% of people can’t tell the difference between a FLAC and a WAV..or between a WAV and an mp3. People can tell you when they hear something that sounds like shit.. did you rip that off of youtube ..in low res? cuz its lacking..but when you put polished formats up against other polished formats and try to declare a winner..you and the crowd lose out on wha could have been a great tune.
VINYL vs PIRATE
bringing me to my next point… vinyl is dope as fuck…you CANT get all of Prince’s songs because he sues youtube …so pirates are shit out of luck until someone BUYS the Prince RECORD and saves mankind by ripping it and posting it for download for pirates to then steal. please rip good quality please.
But wait theres more….not only are vinyls socially the best format from the get go(they do deteriorate, but cd’s scratch too!) but they also contain unlisted version of songs,that you didn’t know existed or couldn’t find until someone rips..this is the proprietary element of a VINYL DJ..access to songs lazy dj’s don’t have & can’t find..an accumulation of these songs..will set you apart from Donny Download, and Jerry Generic. If you were worried about job security, as a dJ( and I AM), I would buy as much vinyl as possible and only play songs that shazam can’t find..which is a good indicator that it’s not on youtube or the internet. Patrons who like my sets.. will have to GO to my shows to hear those songs..Prince wins because I’m promoting him at my shows and the only place to go to hear the songs after my set is to a record store to BUY princes record containing THAT song..other DJS LEARN that the song exists,but can’t just go home and carbon copy me by downloading the mp3 version off youtube,because I Haven’t ripped to youtube yet…they learn..and maybe they go acquire it ..or ask me about it ..but thats proprietary…thats what makes you skilled..not everyone can go out..find obscure good songs.. and enough of them to play 4 hour sets twice a week..most people will run out of bangers after just the 4 hours..and then its billie jean time.. so to recap

1. owning records with songs only availbe on THAT record and nowhere else, giving your set a proprietary element
2. knowing which songs to acquire to keep people happy, dancing moving, and trusting that you will play songs to what they want to hear but not necessarily exactly the song they wanted to hear
3. not being lazy.. the ability to balance between playing the highest quality tracks while also incorporating new music and technology,

hypocritical sidetone about Spotify
Spotify is close, I mean..if you pay for Spotify premium…thats a run for your money…we as DJ’s are basically only protected by what the artist does to stay off of Spotify.. for example..Prince doesn’t like his music on Spotify so he didn’t allow the mot license most of his albums..so they don’t appear on Spotify..this allows us an edge over Spotify when playing Prince songs..however..aside from the 2-3 second gap between songs.. spotty is as good a DJ.. as most DJ’s.. people want to hear songs.. Spotify plays songs..people want to hear obscure songs that sound like a certain artist.. Spotify knows how to do that too..basically the long continuous mix aspect is the part missing from Spotify..and I want to stick my neck out and say…club goers don’t give a fuck…dancers might..like they are doing the worm..into the electric slide..and then your Spotify song ends..2 seconds silence.. then the new song starts..that’ll fuck up a dancers groove..but 15 chicks in a pool…8 guys bbqing..THEY DON’T GIVE A FUCK…..soo it depends..I don’t think a packed smoky club room should ever experience Spotify..or the silence in-between changing songs.. but I wouldn’t try to bet that Spotify can’t just get a tempo algorithm going and just blend/sync the songs…so just LET ALL your ego go..the machines have beat you..you are in the matrix… settle for what little proprietary human elements of skill we have left..as they too are soon to be eclipsed..old records are not infinite( am I really saying that one day all records will be uploaded to the internet? no,,but all the ones you want someday will)

some places don’t want to pay royalty fees for having music,places like sports bars, and they know DJ’s don’t usually pay royalties for the songs they play, so they just book a dj, as a cheaper version OF a jukebox…lolol..full circle..(Ive gotten booked this way before, basically owner says I was cheaper than paying ASCAP royalties),
I don’t claim to love or BE a DJ… but I AM one…I write songs…and they become too complex for me to play all the instruments at once..or the sound of the song can’t be translated well live. So I have to play the recorded version of the song..perhaps I’ll sing over it..or play guitar/keyboard.trumpet over it… but I’m only doing it because i don’t have 50 arms..I could hire a entire live band..and lug the around in my suitcase, I could sync a drum machine over there. and a synthesizer over hear..and lug them all around…to compose my live set fresh every time…or I could provide the same..sometimes superior sound experience, by recording my set, and playing it as a DJ would(plus its more modest and less nerve wrecking that way)..( I’m not referring to recording a mixed set..I mean a live set) one could argue that laziness is involved..if I had infinite time..and infinite strength..I’d bring my whole fucking drum set to each show…on each plane..and pay attention to that minute of a detail..but after years ..I’ve surveyed every person on earth…and the general consensus was..they couldn’t tell the difference between the recorded drum machine and the actual drum machine..both sounded the same to them..so why carry it? ego? cough…vanity?..”I have a drum machine nyeh nyeh!!” ..also I evolved into what I am now…because I also don’t particularly think it’s interesting to listen to the same guys music for 4 hours..if I have a 4 hour set..I might have 1-3 of my own songs in it..the rest are songs that go well with the set..the song or the people in the crowd..shorter sets work better for artists playing sets made of just there songs. I never cared about being popular,I just liked to dance..I didn’t get into this to be famous, or to get the perks. I honestly never believed that any would ever come,I just fearlessly went forth with what made me feel good.

Dont Hide your songs
no matter what, I like the feeling I get of playing my guitar, I could be alone,or in front of people…I like using my fingers…to speak..instead of my mouth…machine or not…CDJ or turntable..sync button or by ear…I’m expressing myself..in a way I found meaningful..a machine cannot take this away from me..no button can..and because the feeling is not dependent on money..to me, I have always been a success since the first time I tried. Other people began to recognize my “talent” and they listened to it..simple.. I don’t have to keep trying to marginalize others..or explain WHY todays music isn’t as good as blah blah…its all based on I’m doing what makes me feel good.. and if others feel good by listening to what I do to make me feel good. Thats groovy. thats cool. I can dig it. Thats sustainable forever..thats a goal anyone can attain. and thats what BREEDS good DJs.
p.s we are all benefiting from the surge of popularity that EDM has unexpectedly given our genres…and culture ..and profession.. through general confusion of genres..our electric funk and deep house has been confused with this party poop, but that means we inflated too. They partied when they had nothing to celebrate, while we were there expressing ourselves..being loud trying to be heard, because nobody ever listens..while we were there learning and watching, and living, they were next door not getting it. listening to EDM..not raving to get away..but because they have nothing else to do..almost like these fuckers are the exact people I was going to a rave to get away from..found out where the secret rave was.. killed its vibe… and then want to post how lame the raves have become..thanks..thats why I encourage to enjoy sustainable things..think about your self 10 years from now..more mature..why invest in a lifestyle thats impossible to keep up with..40 years old..still that dude in the club huh?..well don’t be..don;t make your nights about things that are not sustainable joy..I’m not saying you should be a music nerd like me, who gets invited to YOUR favorite party..and sits down..to observe and listen and take notes..but notice how when I’m 40..I can still do that just as efficiently as I did when was 30..or 20…use that as a guideline..my club fun experience only dies when I do, because I built it on a foundation of learning, and self expression. Every club in the world could close down, and I’d be fine, because it starts with me,,alone,,in a room.and my guitar..very basic. and very sustainable. It is my suspicion that people who make those remarks about how club life is boring. are now just boring people, who only had a connection with superficial fleeting things, that were cooler than they were and once this things died out, or they aged out of them, they sat back and realized. they weren’t actually ABOUT anything..not driven by anything, and are just old as fuck now..time to get a cubicle, while we ready your tombstone. We unanimously despise EDM..but I wonder…after its gone..will Kerri Chandler make a song about you guys…you must be lost..tryna turn to R&B…you must be lost…trine turn to EDM… lol Kerri Chandler -Oblivion.

now homie..I know! you know…you flourish off of people expressing themselves and being free…FREE..you can’t tell someone HOW to be free..you can compare what you see, and have an opinion..but you can’t tell someone..who was excited to see you,…maybe they wanted to learn what DJing is all about, or how u do it..or if your full of shit..maybe they love music, but hate dancing and people…many they aren’t here for YOUR predetermined reason…perhaps they are like me,and consider clubs and parties work and test experiments..and are studying you,the levels, the crowds interaction with the songs…cuz thats what I do..I’d go to a club…on purpose an hour early…stand around..learn..take in what it was that I’d want to do in that position, and how the other guy did it..thats how you learn..what was I supposed to do…imagine and pull it out my ass.. I watched him use filters..and I watched him speak on the mic..I noticed when the club opened..he didn’t play 130 BPM but was chill and picked up later..subtleties were noticed..I noticed HOW two DJs shared a set, one booth two DJs..I had questions,,what was the other guy doing, where they doing anything at all..is that the real record.I thought it was impossible to find..I gotta go see..as a eternal scholar of music..I found/find the answers to these questions more interesting than..the actual night of partying..I wait all week to learn a little more..don’t get me wrong..when its time to celebrate I do.. I dance, and party ..but my private confession is..I could WATCH my fav DJS..DJ all night..and go home and I’d have taken notes ..to learn and improve..when I write songs…I’ll know what parts to make..based on the reactions crowds had to certain songs DJs played..I wouldn’t know that if I wasn’t paying attention..staring up at you..like a zombie…sorry…but that can’t be everybody..but it IS some people..that IS me being FREE. I actually LIKE to ‘WORK’ and thats a part of my research..now onto cameras…dude..I do drugs and shit..I might be getting free with my ex that night..and u wanna take picture of you and BOB, posted up in the club,but now your flash went off, and it exposed my ex doing a line off my dick..thanks..asshole…but whats worst is you don’t know us or don’t care …all u care about is you and BOB looking cool, so u go and post that shit somewhere ,and now in the infinite internet me and my ex are caught red handed..so just be careful of what your doing..some people like the dark privacy..,they seek it out and they want to be free in the dark..your spreading light on them..they don’t like that..and to you vampires..not everyone is a nihilist…some people like to remember moments..and u know..take a picture it will last longer..dude just got a hand shake and a signed vinyl from his favorite DJ….let the man get a picture or two,and allow him some flash too..toleration baby…is the name of the game…BUT lastly..don’t fucking ask ME to plug in your phone..my god..or download a request ..my god…..or hold your shit…MY GOD…theres no other side to this.
